Unblock

Overview:

Unblock is an app to combat creative block. Creative block is the inability to access one's internal creativity. Unblock includes exercises, guided meditations, and tips and allows the user to set up a personal plan with reminders.

Problem:

98% of creatives experience creative block at some point in their career. With the rise of resources, talent, ability, and accessibility via social media, there has been a decline in mental health in creatives. Creative block is usually due to mental blocks. This can be detrimental to a creative’s mental health.

Challenge:

Create an app that provides users with actions to combat creative blocks.

Approach:

Create a relaxing platform for creators. Soothing graphics, flow, Inviting typography, and earthy tones. I want the user to feel a sense of growth and improvement.

Solutions:

It can be difficult to get past a creative block, often simply becoming aware of how, when, and why a creative block develops can help a person work to address the creative block and prevent it from returning. Actions such as journaling, meditating, exercise and more are most benificial to stimulating the creative mind.

Survey findings:

My survey is directed towards multidisciplinary creatives.

The majority of people feel like Creative Block/Imposter Syndrome affects them multiple times every year.

The number one cause of creative block is comparison.

Nearly all of them feel this affects their life significantly.

Some examples on how will this app tackle each step of its mission.

How to provide actionable resources for creatives who feel too overwhelmed to know what steps to take to combat their creative block? Solution: Narrow down what is causing the block or what the user wants to combat. Then provide the user daily exercises and initiatives for the user to partake in.

How to keep the user invested in the app and something that they look forward to? Solution: create a fun process through the app, with calming colors and engaging visuals. Give the user inspiration and motivation through positive feedback and notifications. Give the user many options in a way that is not overwhelming. Give them the option for setting reminders to make unblock a common practice.

Start off – introducing the app and then asking the users what block they’re currently feeling. This will then personalize their results (exercises, meditations, tips and planning) based on what form of mental block they are experiencing. The user can also chose not to specify and see all exercises, meditations and tips for each feeling of block.

The navigation bar consists of the home screen–unblock tab, a central button for the gut check question and the grow tab. The grow tab is a users personal growth page which consists of their favored exercises, meditations and tips. As well as a ‘creative dump’ area to store the users creative thoughts and ideas as well as their documented exercises. Grow is a central location for the user to always access their thoughts.
